In November of 1854 nightingale was called to train 30 nurses and as soon as that was done they were all to be taken to crimea, to help care for the wounded in the crimean war. When, she first arrived she travelled on horseback making inspections she then transfered into a mule cart and was reported to have escaped serious injury when it was toppled in an accident. following this episode she used a solid russian carriage with waterproof hood and curtians. this carriage was returned to the nightingales training school for nurses in england, it was damaged when the hospital the hospitals was bombed in the Blitz. It was restored and transferred to the army musem in Aldershot.
She reportedly treated 2,000 patients. she also contracted Crimean Fever. The enviroment was horrible. It was common for nurses of either sex to be drunk on the job most of the time. It was common practice was to never wash your hand or to never change the sheets on a bed. Even if that patient died you did not change the sheets you would just give this bed to a new patient. There was no personal hygiene. And hardly any food. But Florence nightingale Stuck it out she told all the nurses that they were to start cleaning. That way it would be a healthier enviroment. She treated 2,000 patients alone.
During the night florence would walk around the war grounds and check on everyone making sure that they didin't need anything and she carried a dim lantern. so eventually she ended up with the name "lady with the lamp".
